The Advanced Neurogastroenterology and Motility Fellowship is a one-year clinical and research training opportunity beginning annually on July 1. The Neurogastroenterology and Motility (NGM) Fellow will be appointed to a year-long clinical instructor position. This advanced fellowship is not ACGME accredited and does not participate in the NRMP Match Program.
Goals and Objectives
The primary goal of this fellowship is to provide formalized and immersive subspecialty training in the field of neurogastroenterology and motility in preparation for launching an academic career in this discipline. Over the course of the year, the NGM Fellow will gain exposure to the wide range of relevant pathology seen at our quaternary referral center. Training objectives will span the clinical management of complex medical conditions, the interpretation of specialized physiologic testing modalities, and the inception and completion of at least one original research project under the mentorship of a core faculty member within the Program in Neurogastroenterology and Motility. The breadth and depth of the training experience will be further supported through collaboration with colleagues in esophagology, surgery, pediatrics, psychology, and radiology, among others. By the completion of this advanced training program, fellows will successfully demonstrate proficiency in the evaluation and management of common presentations to a subspecialty neurogastroenterology and motility clinic and in the performance and interpretation of procedures typical to a comprehensive gastrointestinal physiology laboratory.
Responsibilities
The NGM Fellow will be expected to attend regularly scheduled clinic sessions with selected preceptors, supervised performance and interpretation of core physiology laboratory procedures, supervised elective time in multidisciplinary clinics of the fellow’s interest, 4 weekly clinical conferences, and bimonthly mentorship meetings. Additional elective time will be allocated toward the completion of at least one longitudinal scholarly project of interest. As a clinical instructor, the NGM Fellow will complete a limited amount of independent clinical and/or endoscopic activity in general gastroenterology in ambulatory and inpatient settings.
Eligibility and Requirements
Fellowship candidates must have graduated from an accredited gastroenterology fellowship program and be Board Eligible or Board Certified (BE/BC) in Gastroenterology at the time of matriculation. While prior experience in neurogastroenterology is neither required nor expected, competitive applicants will be able to demonstrate a longitudinal interest in scholarship as well as a track record of clinical excellence.
