Team-Directed, Patient-Centered Care
Penn IR greatly values and prides itself on excellent clinical care. Our board-certified specialists are actively sought out by patients and referring physicians (non-IR and IR) alike for consultation in interventional radiology procedures. Minimally invasive techniques are the hallmark of the practice, and our clinical teams perform key IR procedures like:
- Arterial revascularization
- Complex hemodialysis and venous access
- DVT thrombolysis and deep venous recanalization for chronic DVT
- Embolization of pulmonary arteriovenous malformations (PAVM) and other vascular malformations
- IVC filter placement/complex IVC filter removal
- Kidney tumor ablation and embolization
- Laser ablation for varicose veins
- Liver directed tumor therapy (chemoembolization/radioembolization/tumor ablation)
- Lymphatic leaks and lymph flow disorder treatments

In 2021, the Penn Center for Lymphatic Disorders became the first LE&RN Comprehensive Center of Excellence in the Diagnosis and Treatment of Lymphatic Diseases in the region for adult care.

Training Future IR Leaders
Penn Interventional Radiology trainees receive comprehensive, premier education at one of the most sought after IR training programs in the nation.
Our residency program provides a varied and professionally fulfilling foundation from which to launch an Interventional Radiology career. Graduates have gone on to become heads of IR in both the academic and private sectors, successful entrepreneurs and leading clinicians and researchers.
The Interventional Radiology fellowship offers exposure to a wide variety of cases in the full range of IR. Fellows gain extensive experience and expertise in diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in the areas mentioned above. They actively participate in the full spectrum of patient care including inpatient consultation and our busy office practice; while IR is a procedural specialty, the emphasis in Penn IR is strongly clinical.
The medical student vascular and interventional radiology elective is one of the most sought after IR electives in the country. Students function as part of the IR team and participate in morning conference, rounds, procedures, and the outpatient clinic. Although not required, students are strongly encouraged to take this elective after they have completed their core clerkships in medicine and surgery. Students are encouraged to apply early due to high interest in the rotation.
Advancing IR Technology and Procedures
Penn IR has long been a pioneer of IR procedures and techniques, in part through its clinical trials with patients and testing of emerging technologies.
Established in 2013, the Penn Image-Guided Interventions Lab (PIGI) is recognized as a field leader in interventional radiology research. The PIGI Lab builds on the legacy of innovation for which Penn IR is well-known, in large part through the pioneering work of Dr. Constantin "Stan" Cope. His legacy of innovation lives on in the entirely new field of lymphatic diagnosis & intervention, which grew out of his pioneering developments in thoracic duct catheterization.
The PIGI Lab is part of the Departments of Radiology and Cancer Biology in the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. The laboratory performs translational research developing novel imaging approaches and advanced therapeutics in interventional radiology. A team science approach leverages the convergence of image-guided interventions, cancer/vascular biology and molecular imaging to address clinical deficiencies, and seeks to go from bedside-to-bench and back again to develop breakthroughs in personalized precision medicine.
