The Business and Innovation of Radiology (BAIR) track is a unique pathway that aims to empower enrolled residents to become thought-leaders and innovators who are positioned to transform radiology practice.

This track provides structured opportunities for residents to establish a solid foundation in four core areas of our field and healthcare system:

  • Practice Transformation
  • Healthcare Economics
  • Business of Radiology
  • Health Policy

Our BAIR track is a longitudinal program designed to be completed throughout the four years of radiology residency under the guidance of mentors at the executive level in our department. The track consists of monthly seminars, experiential learning sessions, and a mentored capstone project.

Monthly seminars have included a world-class group of invited speakers such as our department’s Chief Administrative Officer, faculty innovators, radiologist and imaging entrepreneurs with successful multi-million dollar company acquisitions, healthcare venture capitalists, internationally renowned radiology department chairmen, Wharton business school professors, and the university’s Chief Innovation Officer.

Funding for a healthcare operations class taught by a Wharton business school professor is incorporated into the didactic component. Experiential learning includes small group sessions on business and healthcare innovation topics relevant to the field of radiology. Residents also have many opportunities to network and gain practical experience in business operations by participating in departmental and hospital-wide committee meetings.

Another integral component of the track is using dedicated elective time to complete a mentored capstone project. This capstone project offers residents an opportunity to work with current radiology leaders to design and implement innovative solutions to challenges encountered in the field.

BAIR Track Members

Current

Vedant Acharya, MD
Class of 2026 - R2 (PGY3)

There are several factors, such as AI, teleradiology or value-based care that will have a transformative effect on radiology over the next 30 years. I joined the BAIR track to understand the entire imaging workflow, including the non-clinical aspects (operational, financial, strategic and technological) which will be critical for radiologists’ leadership in the ever-changing clinical imaging enterprise.

Capstone Project: TBD

About:

  • BSBA in Finance at the University of Miami
  • Former Executive Director of the Department of Community Service (DOCS) at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine (2018-2019)

Vineeth Gangaram, MD
Class of 2026 - R2 (PGY3)

Coming into medicine with a software development background, I've noticed numerous chances to improve medical care using technology. However, over time, I've realized that identifying pain-points and creating technological solutions aren’t enough. The unique payment and incentive structures in healthcare often limit the growth of projects beneficial to patients and providers. Without aligning the system's incentives, many promising initiatives fail to maximize their impact. The BAIR track offers a chance for me to understand the factors driving the healthcare industry, equipping me to design scalable solutions that align incentives and can go beyond one-off projects.

Capstone Project: TBD

About:

  • Prior Software Engineer at Verily (Google Life Sciences)
  • Lead software developer for Columbia’s first ResearchKit App CovidWatcher
  • Worked on Penn Radiology Residency’s automated call scheduling tool

Kari Williams, MD MBA
Class of 2026 - R2 (PGY3)

I have been interested in the business of medicine since the beginning of medical school; it’s one of the main reasons why I decided to obtain an MBA while in medical school. I am very interested in expanding access to care and modern radiological services—decreasing time to imaging/biopsy, artificial intelligence, improved screening services etc. Now is the perfect time for medicine to nurture and empower its physician entrepreneurs. I know BAIR will provide me with the tools I need to develop as a businessperson while ensuring patient safety remains paramount.

Capstone Project: TBD

About:

  • Completed her MD at the University of Texas – Medical Branch (2021) and Master of Business Administration – University of Houston – Clear Lake (2020) dual degree.

Jaclyn Lundberg, MD
Class of 2025 - R3 (PGY4)

I’ve always been so intrigued by the business aspects of medicine. I really believe that we can use business to powerfully impact the healthcare system and change fundamental healthcare inequalities in medicine today. I want to create a way to provide easier access to radiological services. Business can change things on a much larger scale than anything we can do on an individual level. This is something I believe in wholeheartedly, and I’m excited that BAIR will empower me to execute my ideas.

Capstone Project: TBD
