ATLS (Advanced Trauma Life Support)

To become an instructor for ATLS:

  1. Must be a physician (APPs able to be providers but not instructors according to the ACS)
  2. Take an ATLS Provider Course 
  3. Take an ATLS Instructor Course while you are still a current provider (4 year certification period)
  4. Sign up to perform proctored teaching - contact PACETraining@pennmedicine.upenn.edu
  5. Perform proctored teaching at an ATLS course and be signed off as an Instructor Candidate

To maintain ATLS instructor status:

  1. Teach in 4 ATLS courses (either a provider or refresher course) within your 4 year instructor reverification period

ATLS new edition faculty updates:

  • As of 2020, ATLS is 10th edition
  • Current ATLS faculty will receive a faculty training update webinar whenever a new ATLS edition is released
  • View the webinar and answer the questions provided in order to become certified for the latest edition of ATLS
  • Once the ACS sends PACE information on edition updates, faculty will be notified

ATCN (Advanced Trauma Care for Nurses)

To become an instructor for the ATCN course:

  1. Must be a Registered Nurse
  2. Complete the ATCN course scoring 80% or greater on the post-test and be identified as having "Instructor Potential" in skill stations
  3. Complete the ATCN Instructor Course
  4. Sign up to perform proctored teaching (contact April.Brown@pennmedicine.upenn.edu or Kristen.Chreiman@pennmedicine.upenn.edu)
  5. Perform proctored teaching at an ATCN course and be signed off by a course director

RNs and Scrub Techs

For all Perioperative Surgical Technologists and Registered Nurses, we have opportunities to participate in our ATOM (Advanced Trauma Operative Management) and ASSET (Advanced Surgical Skills for Exposure in Trauma) courses.  Each volunteer will scrub in and become an important team member adding to our student-surgeon’s education as they repair simulated traumatic injuries to anesthetized swine.
 
Parking will be validated and food provided.  It’s a great opportunity for you, a great addition to your resumes and advancement applications, and an opportunity to earn annual Trauma Hours for the RNs.

Just bring yourself, your scrubs, and your OR expertise! 

ATOM (Advanced Trauma Operative Management)

To become an instructor for the ATOM course:

  1. Must be a surgeon or surgeon in training
  2. Complete the ATOM course as a student
  3. Sign up to perform proctored teaching (see the links below)
  4. Complete mandatory compliance training via Knowledge Link (for those internal to Penn)
    • For those employed outside of the Penn system who would like to teach in our ATOM courses, please contact PACETraining@pennmedicine.upenn.edu in order to have these training requirements coordinated
  5. Perform proctored teaching at an ATOM course and be signed off by a course director

To maintain ATOM instructor status:

  1. Teach in 4 ATOM courses within a 4 year reverification period

ASSET (Advanced Surgical Skills for Exposure in Trauma)

To become an instructor for the ASSET course:

  1. Must be a surgeon or surgeon in training
  2. Complete the ASSET course as a student
  3. Sign up to perform proctored teaching- contact PACETraining@pennmedicine.upenn.edu
  4. Perform proctored teaching at an ASSET course and be signed off by a course director

To maintain ASSET instructor status:

  1. Teach in 4 ASSET courses within a 4 year reverification period

DMEP (Disaster Management and Emergency Preparedness)

To become an instructor for the DMEP course:

  1. Must be a healthcare provider experienced in trauma care and disaster management and response (MD, DO, RN, APP, EMT)
  2. Instructor for ATLS, ATCN, TNCC, PHTLS, or ADLS
  3. Complete the DMEP course scoring 85% or greater on the post-test and be noted as having "Instructor Potential" by DMEP faculty
  4. Experience with disaster planning or involvement
  5. Take FEMA ICS courses IS-100HC and IS-200HC
  6. Complete RTTDC proctored teaching and be signed off by course director

FCCS (Fundamentals of Critical Care Support)

To become an instructor for the FCCS course:

  1. Must be a healthcare provider certified in critical care or spending >50% practice time in ICU with signed attestation
  2. Complete the FCCS course as a student and score 80% or greater on the post-test
  3. Complete the instructor curriculum
  4. Sign up to perform proctored teaching (see the links below)
  5. Perform proctored teaching at an FCCS course and be signed off by a course director
  6. Complete SCCM's instructor application and send directly to them

To maintain FCCS instructor status:

  1. Teach 2 FCCS course components within a 2 year reverification period

To become an instructor for the RTTDC course:

  1. Must be a healthcare provider experienced in trauma care (provider or instructor) (surgeon, emergency physician, family physician, advanced practice provider, nurse, prehospital provider)
  2. Sign up to perform proctored teaching- see the link below and contact PACETraining@pennmedicine.upenn.edu
  3. Review and become familiar with course materials 
  4. Complete RTTDC proctored teaching

B-Con (Bleeding Control Course)

To become an instructor for the B-Con course:

  1. Must be a healthcare provider
  2. Complete the B-Con course as a student
  3. Contact InjuryPrevention@pennmedicine.upenn.edu or PACETraining@pennmedicine.upenn.edu to express interest in teaching B-Con
  4. You will then be added to the email distribution list for B-Con instructors so you can be notified about upcoming teaching opportunities (or you can keep checking the PACE website under B-Con - link below)
  5. When you find a date you'd like to teach, email InjuryPrevention@pennmedicine.upenn.edu or PACETraining@pennmedicine.upenn.edu
  6. Teach B-Con!
