Education Fellowship Hands OnWelcome to Penn Emergency Medicine Medical Education Scholarship Fellowship! This fellowship is designed to develop leaders who are primed to make impactful and innovative contributions to medical education.

We have intentionally structured this program to include leadership, teaching, and scholarship opportunities across UME, GME, and CME. Fellows will complete a M.S.Ed degree through the Medical Education Master’s Program at the Graduate School of Education at the University of Pennsylvania. Fellows will also have opportunities to develop advanced training in simulation, coaching, and medical education research.

Our formal training and skill development opportunities are paired with individualized coaching and mentorship with world renowned leaders across the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine to help propel your career in academic medicine.

Clinical Requirement

Fellows hold an appointment as clinical instructor within the Department of Emergency Medicine. They will work approximately 8 shifts per month (828 hours/year) as an attending physician in the emergency department at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and HUP Cedar. 

Length of Program

The program is two years in length and is designed to provide broad exposure to the landscape of medical education. As fellows identify and pursue particular areas of expertise, responsibilities will be revised for the second year based on the fellow’s determined area of interest and goals.

Prerequisites

  • Completion of an ACGME accredited residency program in either emergency medicine or a combined residency program in emergency medicine/internal medicine or emergency medicine/family medicine
  • Board-eligible or board certified in emergency medicine
  • Career interest in education administration and scholarship

Salary, Tuition and Benefits

  • Annual salary of approximately $83,041/year plus a robust benefits package and malpractice insurance. Actual salary changes each year and aligns with the Penn PGY5 and PGY6 salaries as listed on the Penn GME website. Fellows are hired as faculty,  and are paid on a monthly basis. 
  • Substantial financial support and stipend to cover tuition costs of the MSEd Program at Penn GSE
  • $4000/year to support access to technology and materials as well as courses to develop advanced skills in simulation, coaching, and advanced medical education scholarship. 
  • $2500/year to support attendance to CORD Academic Assembly (year 1) and AAMC Lead, Learn and Serve (year 2)
  • CME funds of $4000/year to support attendance at any additional annual meetings, and board certification in Emergency Medicine. 
  • Membership to CORD, SAEM and AMA

Program Aim

The aim of the fellowship is to develop leaders in medicine with expertise in educational theory and design, teaching methods, education program administration and leadership, education research, and career development. The program is designed to provide instruction, experience, and mentorship to allow fellows the environment and support necessary to obtain the knowledge and skills to meet the proposed aim.

Goals and Objectives

1. Understand the principles of career development and develop and apply the necessary knowledge and skills for career advancement as an expert in medical education.

  • Develop a curriculum vitae and educator’s portfolio
  • Understand and navigate the promotion and tenure process
  • Participate in mentorship relationships as both a mentor and mentee
  • Obtain training in leadership techniques focusing on collaboration and change management
  • Develop skills in negotiation and time management
  • Participate in career planning including setting both short and long-term goals
  • Identify and pursue expertise in a specific niche of medical education

2. Develop expertise in learning theory, curriculum development, and instructional design, and teaching methodologies. 

  • Understand and apply principles of learning theory including but not limited to pedagogy and andragogy, learning preferences, transfer of learning, emotional intelligence)
  • Develop and participate in didactic education including small and large group teaching and understand and apply different didactic methodologies
  • Understand and apply concepts of clinical teaching methodologies
  • Understand and apply clinical reasoning strategies (organizing knowledge, problem representations, illness scripts, cognitive errors, script concordance testing, etc.)
  • Understand and apply the principles of educational innovation, instructional design and curriculum development
  • Understand and apply principles of feedback
  • Understand the approach to the difficult learner
  • Understand and apply concepts of role modeling
  • Experience the process of simulation scenario development and implementation and debriefing methodologies

3. Develop expertise in education scholarship including innovation and research methodology.

  • Understand and participate in scholarly work as defined by Boyer’s model of Scholarship.

  • Identify research problems and develop research questions

  • Understand and apply the components of the research paradigm, including ontology and epistemology and their role in research design and analysis.

  • Understand and apply conceptual frameworks to education research

  • Understand and apply rigorous research design methods

  • Understand and navigate the research ethics review process

  • Develop understanding of both quantitative and qualitative analyses in education research

  • Develop the necessary skills to participate in scientific presentation, writing, and peer review

  • Develop the ability to critically appraise education literature

  • Understand and participate in development of a grant proposal

4. Obtain knowledge and experience in education program administration in the areas of undergraduate medical education, graduate medical education, and continuing medical education, in addition to program evaluation.

  • Participate in education administrative responsibilities related to undergraduate medical education, graduate medical education, and continuing medical education.

  • Understand and participate in program evaluation

As fellows identify and pursue particular areas of expertise, responsibilities will be revised for the second year based on the fellow’s determined area of interest (GME, UME, CME)As programs, curricula are often revised, the requirements below are subject to change.

The fellow is encouraged to identify projects/scholarly work that can meet multiple fellowship requirements. For example, the longitudinal project completed for the master’s program would ideally be used to meet the requirements for the education scholarship expectations including abstract submission, peer-reviewed publication, and grant development and submission.

General Fellowship Requirements and Advanced Training

  1. Meet with fellowship director twice per month

  3. Complete fellowship related self-reflections, assessments, or other assignments

Education Scholarship

  1. Design and complete a medical education research project
    • Present work at a national meeting
    • Submit work for publication
  2. Design, produce and submit a research grant proposal within the fellow's area of interest
  3. Participate in institutional medical education journal club
  4. Serve on departmental Education Scholarship Committee
