We are pleased to announce that we have received SAEM approval for our Fellowship!

During our two-year fellowship, the candidate will complete the MBA Program for Executives at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, and a clinical Emergency Medicine Administrative Fellowship. In addition, the candidate will play an active role in the Clinical Operations leadership of the Emergency Department of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. The candidate will also work clinically as an attending physician (Clinical Instructor) in the HUP ED.

Post-residency Emergency Medicine trained physicians who aspire to administrative and operational leadership positions in academic or private practice.

Candidates will have completed an ABEM-accredited residency in emergency medicine and be board certified/board eligible. The candidate must complete all requirements, the Wharton MBA for Executives application process including a recent GMAT or GRE score (less than 5 years old) or the Executive Assessment for those with more than 10 years of work experience, and apply at the first application deadline. The HUP ED will supply your sponsorship letter. As part of the Fellowship application, the candidate will submit a cover letter, CV, and 4 letters of recommendation, at least one of which must come from an academic/administrative mentor who can attest to the candidate’s leadership potential in ED administration and operations.

Format

  • Clinical
    • The candidate will work approximately 918 hours/year in the HUP Emergency Department as a Clinical Instructor.
    • The candidate will not be scheduled for clinical shifts during the period leading up to or during MBA for Executives classes/activities.
  • MBA Program for Executives
    • In May 2025, the candidate will begin the two year MBA for Executives program at the Wharton School.
    • Please note, this will require the candidate be in Philadelphia for one week in late May 2025, and two weekends in June 2025. (Example of prior schedule) It is the candidate's responsibility to arrange their schedule to ensure attendance. 
    • The Wharton School has a world-renowned Healthcare Management faculty; there is opportunity to create independent study with these faculty during year two of the MBA Program for Executives.
  • Administrative
    • The candidate will participate in weekly Clinical Operations Leadership meetings in the HUP ED, including Quality and Safety, revenue cycle, billing, strategic operations, patient relations.
    • The candidate will lead and participate in projects as directed by the Clinical Operations leadership. These projects may include but are not limited to: operational management, budgeting, performance improvement, regulatory affairs, strategic planning, quality and safety, revenue cycle, and patient experience.
  • Leadership
    • Specific leadership mentors will be identified for the candidate, depending on the candidate’s background, interests, and goals. The candidate will have regular mentorship meetings with these faculty to develop enhanced leadership skills
    • These faculty may come from within the Department of Emergency Medicine, the leadership of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, the leadership of the University of Pennsylvania Health System, or other positions as appropriate.
    • During the second year of the fellowship, the fellow may be named and serve as Assistant Medical Director of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania Emergency Department, contingent upon satisfactory performance in year 1 of the fellowship and at the discretion of the Fellowship Director and Associate Director. 
  • Scholarly
    • The candidate will collaborate with the Clinical Operations as well as the Research faculty to develop skills in operations and implementation research. It is expected that by graduation the fellow will have produced at minimum one scholarly project of publishable quality.
    • The candidate will be funded to attend the ACEP Emergency Department Director’s Academy.
  • Educational
    • The candidate will be expected to deliver two lectures to the residents; one on core EM content and another on a topic within EM Administration and Operations. The candidate will work with the Clinical Operations as well as Education Faculty to develop these lectures.
    • The candidate will be expected to be available for mentorship of residents in administrative topics.
    • The fellow will be funded to attend an emergency department operations training course such as the ACEP Emergency Department Director’s Academy or the Institute for Healthcare Improvement’s Perfecting Emergency Department Operations course.
  • Salary, Tuition, and Benefits
    • The candidate will receive competitive Fellows salary plus benefits.          
    • The candidate will receive substantial financial support for the tuition costs of the MBA Program for Executives at the Wharton School.
    • The candidate will be provided office space, a computer, telephone, and administrative support.
