About Dr. Coulthard

Commander Stacy Lauren Coulthard was born and raised in Radford, Virginia. She received a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Science and Mechanics with a minor in Mathematics from Virginia Tech, and a Master of Science in Anatomy at Virginia Commonwealth University. She continued her studies at the Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Virginia, achieving her Doctor of Medicine in May 2008. She was commissioned as an officer in the United States Navy upon completion of her medical degree through the Health Professions Scholarship Program and completed her Internal Medicine residency at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth (NMCP).  

She became board certified in Internal Medicine in August 2011 and was stationed at Naval Medical Center Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. In 2012, she was selected to serve the United States Congress as a Staff Physician at the Office of the Attending Physician (OAP), United States Capitol, Washington, DC. While at the OAP, she was selected as a Fellow in the American College of Physicians, appointed Senior Medical Officer, and awarded the Navy Commendation Medal.  She completed her assignment at the US Capitol in May 2015, at which time she chose to pivot her career and pursue surgical training. She moved to Atlanta, Georgia, and started her residency in General Surgery at Emory University in July 2015. 

Upon completion of her surgical residency in June 2020, returned to Virginia for an assignment as the General Surgeon with Fleet Surgical Team TWO (FST-2) at Naval Station Norfolk. With FST-2, she deployed on the USS WASP (LHD-1) in support of anti-submarine exercises, the USS ARLINGTON (LPD-24) in August 2021 during Joint Task Force HAITI Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief efforts, and with the USS KEARSARGE for the 2022 KEARSARGE ARG/22 MEU deployment. She was then assigned to the 2nd Medical Battalion, Bravo Surgical Company in Portsmouth, Virginia under the 2nd Marine Logistics Group. During this assignment, she was the Associate Program Director for the NMCP General Surgery residency program, as well as Site Director for Surgery Clerkships at NMCP. She is an Assistant Professor of Medicine and Surgery at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland.  Commander Coulthard was elected as a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons in October 2022, and is currently in fellowship training at the University of Pennsylvania in Trauma and Surgical Critical Care. She has earned the Meritorious Service Medal, Armed Services Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, and Surface Warfare Medical Department Officer qualification.
