Edward T. Dickinson, MD, NRP, FACEP, FAEMS is a Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine in the Perelman School of Medicine of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Dr. Dickinson also serves as a Medical Director of the PENNStar Flight helicopter program. He is board certified in emergency medicine and with secondary board certification in Emergency Medical Services by the American Board of Emergency medicine (ABEM). He is an active ACLS and ATLS instructor.

Dr. Dickinson received his AB in English from Colgate University, and his MD from SUNY Stony Brook in 1989. He completed his emergency medicine residency and was Chief Resident at the Medical Center of Delaware. He was a member of the emergency medicine faculty and Director of EMS at Albany Medical College prior to joining Penn Medicine in 1997. As a member of the Penn faculty, he has been honored as Emergency Physician of the Year by the Pennsylvania Emergency Health Services Council and is an inaugural member of the Penn Medicine Academy of Master Clinicians.

He began his career in emergency services in 1979 as an EMT-firefighter and served as a company officer, training officer and assistant fire chief prior to attending medical school. In 1986 he was the first volunteer firefighter in the United States to ever receive the top heroism award from Firehouse Magazine in recognition of his rescue of two women from a house fire in Columbia County, NY. Dr. Dickinson continues to be active in the fire service and hands-on prehospital patient care with EMS. He has maintained his National Registry paramedic certification since 1983. He currently serves as EMS Medical Director of the Malvern, Radnor and Berwyn Fire Companies in sub-urban Philadelphia. He has authored and edited numerous major EMS textbooks. Dr. Dickinson’s EMT textbooks have been translated into multiple languages and sold over a million copies worldwide.
