Listen to Dr. Samir Mehta discuss Slips and Falls: Winter Weather Safety Tips from Penn Medicine's Level 1 Trauma Center.

Winter Weather Tip 1: Give yourself time. By giving yourself some extra time you'll be more likely to see that patch of ice and maybe walk around it.

Winter Weather Tip 2: Wear appropriate shoes. A good pair of winter boots can make a huge difference.

Winter Weather Tip 3: Wear clothes with padding. Consider wearing some heavier padding around your hip and pelvis so if you do slip and fall some of that will be absorbed.

If you do slip and fall and have a non-displaced fracture, please see a doctor right away to increase your chances of being treated quickly with a cast or boot. However, if you prolong treatment you will run the risk of turning your fracture into a displaced fracture which can be much more complicated to treat.
