We are proud of our program's diversity and are committed to promoting LGBTQ equality with the residency program, the Department of Medicine, and the health system. Here are several examples of why we think the Penn Internal Medicine Residency Program is a wonderful place to train for LGBTQ house staff:
- We have regular social gatherings for LGBTQ residents, fellows, and faculty, making it easy to find mentorship within the LGBTQ community.
- LGBTQ faculty are visible in the leadership of the residency program.
- Penn Medicine has a comprehensive Program for LGBTQ Health that promotes advanced clinical care for LGBTQ patients, high-quality education surrounding best practices to all learners, a welcoming institutional climate, cutting-edge research surrounding LGBTQ-focused health care, and outreach to our local LGBTQ community.
- The University of Pennsylvania has one of the oldest and largest University-wide LGBTQ centers in the country, and the School of Medicine has an active LGBTQ student group called Penn Med Pride.
- The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and Penn Presbyterian Medical Center are both Leaders in LGBTQ Healthcare Equality, based on the Human Rights Campaign's Healthcare Equality Index.
- The Penn Medicine Center for Health Equity Advancement provides infrastructure for education and innovation for the elimination of health and health care disparities. This includes the annual Penn Medicine Health Equity Week.
- LGBTQ residents can also participate in a cross-residency group, organized by the Housestaff Council of the Graduate Medical Education office. This group sponsors various events for residents and fellows in all programs across HUP and PPMC.
