The educational program in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology aims to provide all medical students with a strong foundation in reproductive health regardless of their career aspirations, and to train interested students to pursue careers as future leaders in Obstetrics and Gynecology.
The continuum of learning in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Perelman School of Medicine begins with the Reproduction Unit in Module 2. This provides the pathophysiologic basis for the Core Clinical Clerkship in Obstetrics and Gynecology. All students then rotate through the 6-week clinical clerkship, which encompasses a range of clinical experiences including antepartum care, labor and delivery, benign and malignant gynecologic surgery, reproductive endocrinology and infertility, preventative care, management of pelvic floor dysfunction, and family planning. For students who wish to pursue additional training in the field, advanced upper level electives are available in Maternal Fetal Medicine, Gynecologic Oncology, Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, Urogynecology, Family Planning, Fetal Diagnosis, Ambulatory Gynecology, and Multi-specialty Gynecology Surgery at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP) and Pennsylvania Hospital (PAH) sites.
