The Ob/Gyn residency at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania has a total of 32 residents, eight in each year of a four-year training program.  We are very proud of our diverse group of committed and talented trainees.

The primary clinical site is the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP). Additional gynecology experience is obtained during rotations at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center and the Veterans Administration of Philadelphia which are both within one mile of the HUP campus. Our patient population is made up of community members from West Philadelphia and the greater Philadelphia region. HUP is also a regional and national referral center, resulting in high volume and acuity in our obstetrics and gynecology practices. The clinical programs provide a rich context for learning: last year we performed over 4,100 deliveries, over 2,100 surgical procedures and approximately 120,000 outpatient visits. The department has over 70 full-time faculty, midwives, and advanced practice providers who work closely with the residents in the clinical realm and who contribute to the educational mission of the department.

We offer residents a broad range of clinical opportunities for training in all aspects of general obstetrics and gynecology and the following sub-specialties:

The curriculum is designed to provide clinical and other educational opportunities to residents with appropriately increasing autonomy and responsibility through the four years of training. Our program prepares residents for practice as specialists in general obstetrics and gynecology or for sub-specialty fellowship training. In addition to clinical training, we have a formal Resident Research Program that provides residents with research training and mentorship. Senior residents participate in leadership skills training. While career paths after residency are varied, residents are equipped with skills necessary for a successful career.
