First Year Post-MD (PGY-1)

The intern year engages residents in team-based care, our culture of safety, and provides experiences in the fundamentals of obstetrics and gynecology in outpatient and inpatient settings.  Rotations include: Labor and Delivery, Night Float, Maternal Fetal Medicine, OB Ultrasound, Gynecology, Gynecologic Oncology, Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, SICU, and Emergency Medicine.  Interns attend weekly continuity clinic to build a patient base and develop longitudinal relationships with patients to continue over the course of residency.  For several months at the start of the year, interns also have protected time to participate in weekly intern specific didactic sessions—“Intern Summer School sessions" that foster a smooth transition into residency.

Second Year Post-MD (PGY-2)

PGY2 residents gain competency in all aspects of basic obstetrics and gynecology under the supervision of senior residents and faculty.  Additionally, residents have opportunities to spend more time in the operating room to gain proficiency in open and minimally invasive surgical techniques.  Rotations include: Labor and Delivery, Night Float, Perinatal Evaluation Center, PEACE (Family Planning), VA Women's Health, Gynecology, Urogynecology, and Junior Jeopardy.

Third Year Post-MD (PGY-3)

The PGY-3 year emphasizes enhanced independence and leadership.  With the support of sub-specialty fellows, PGY-3 residents act as Chief Resident on Postpartum, Maternal Fetal Medicine, and Gynecologic Oncology services.  As senior residents, there is increased autonomy in more complex clinical scenarios including acting as first-call for the OB Trauma service at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center.  Rotations include: Labor and Delivery, Night Float, Maternal Fetal Medicine, Gynecology, Gynecologic Oncology, Penn  Presbyterian Gynecology, and Advanced Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility.  Residents may use an Elective month to focus on research, pursue training opportunities off-site, or engage in global health opportunities such as the Botswana UPenn Partnership.

Fourth Year Post-MD (PGY-4)

Each PGY-4 resident manages team-based care as Chief Resident on the following clinical services: Labor and Delivery, Night Float, Gynecology, OBGYN Consult, Dickens Ambulatory Obstetrics, and Dickens Ambulatory Gynecology.  VA Women’s Health is an opportunity to refine minimally invasive surgical skills and provide comprehensive care for a special population, with an emphasis on trauma-informed care. An additional Elective allows senior residents in-depth experiences in areas of interest, and Jeopardy provides scheduled teaching for clerkship students, allows additional time for research and career development, and supports co-residents with service coverage.  Chief resident responsibilities include provision of complex clinical care with maximal autonomy under supervision, clinical education of medical students, and supervision and coaching of junior residents.
